Sport&EU (the Association for the Study of Sport in the European Union) are pleased to announce that its second annual workshop is to be held on 6-7 July 2007. The workshop is being held in association with, and sponsored by, the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences and the Chester Centre for the Research into Sport and Society (CCRSS) at the University of Chester, and the Centre for the Study of International Governance (CSIG) at Loughborough University.
The Independent European Sport Review and forthcoming Commission White Paper on Sport in the EU have recently focused attention upon the role of the EU in the governance of sport. This second Sport&EU workshop is, therefore, an ideal opportunity to encourage interdisciplinary discussion on the future role and involvement of the EU in the governance of sport. In this regard, the overall objective of the workshop, titled ‘The EU and the governance of sport: policy and perspectives’, is to consider, from a variety of theoretical and policy perspectives, the opportunities and challenges facing future governance of sport in the EU, and the consequences these may have for the relationships between governmental and non-governmental bodies who are centrally involved in the organisation and administration of sport. The workshop also seeks to examine the broader relevance that focusing on sport has for EU studies generally, and understanding the potential role of the EU in other systems of governance in particular.
The organisers, Andy Smith and Chris Platts, invite submission of abstracts of papers that examine any of the following themes: The EU and the governance of sport; European sport policy (e.g. the Independent European Sport Review or the Commission White Paper on Sport); Sports law and future legislation for the sport in the EU; the policy process and sport in the EU; contemporary issues facing sport in the EU (e.g. hooliganism, doping). Papers that offer a comparative perspective on these issues, and which focus on sports other than just football, are particularly welcome.
Abstracts (no longer than 250 words), together with the author’s institutional affiliation and biographical details, should be sent as a word file by email to workshop@sportandeu.com no later than 25 May 2007.
