A long standing member of Sport&EU, Dr. Anastasios Kaburakis, is working with the International Association of Sports Law (IASL) and Istanbul University Law Faculty Centre of Comparative Law on an International Sports Law and Business Conference (ISLBC) in Istanbul, Turkey September 6-7, 2010.  The Conference will coincide with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championships hosted by Turkey in late August – early September 2010.  The objective of the academic and practitioners conference is to discuss the internationalization of sport business, legal and policy issues, and opportunities for collaboration between academic units and sport business practitioners.

Currently, a call for abstracts is available via the conference website. Review Board, tentative agenda, and keynote panelists’ information may be retrieved from the respective website links, which are being updated constantly.  Dr. Kaburakis is chairing the committee (featuring other Sport & EU members as well) that reviews submitted abstracts, as well as final manuscripts submitted to the Special Issue of IASL’s Journal, the International Sports Law Review. Registration, travel, accommodation, and pertinent links are available via the ISLBC website as well.

There are three main motivations for holding this conference.  One is to organize a quality event to take place in Istanbul during the FIBA World Championships, which many international sport administrators will attend.  An event like this provides scholars and practitioners the opportunity to broaden their network and interact with each other.  A second motivation is to pursue academics’ and industry practitioners’ exchanges via collaboration on research and industry-related projects.  The organizers hope that this will alert academics of the contemporary opportunities for cooperation with the industry and encourage them to pursue research that is meaningful and of impact for the field of sport administration.  And a third motivation is to provide an opportunity for Faculty and industry practitioners from Turkey and Greece, in particular, to come closer together and consider further collaboration in the future.
